The business of banking began in Henderson, Nebraska in 1903. By 1907 Henderson had two banks. One was known as the “Friesen” bank and the other the “Kroeker” bank. During the Great Depression, both banks closed. In October, 1943 the current Henderson State Bank was chartered under the leadership of Dean Sack.
The bank was primarily an ag bank with seventy-five percent of the loans in 1943 being made to farmers, fifteen percent to businesses and industries, and the balance to individuals who were wage earners. Throughout the years, the bank changed ownership several times. It was purchased by the current shareholder group in 2006 with a focus on agricultural and commercial business. With the desire to better serve our customers, our leadership decided to expand into other communities in Nebraska. In 2007 we opened our first branch in York, and a branch in Greeley. In 2013 we opened a branch in Giltner and in 2014 a second drive-thru location in York. Most recently, in 2023 our branch in McCook was started. We have been continually investing in new technologies and services to meet the changing needs of our customers, both digitally and in-person.
As a small hometown bank, we realize the importance of giving back to the community. Henderson State Bank and our employees are actively involved in many community organizations and projects in all 5 of our communities. We strive to serve our communities through both financial giving and time.
